Researching the Arts

Lubiana Himid CBE

Hanson Zandi’s creatives visited Lubiana Himid’s exhibition at Tate Modern in search of creative inspiration. They were not disappointed.

Lubiana Himid’s powerful work has made her an influential figure in contemporary art. A brilliant storyteller with an amazing ability to make the everyday outstanding.

Originally from Zanzibar, Lubaina Himid is a cultural activist and British painter who has had a distinguished career for more than four decades, contributing greatly to women’s creativity and the British Black Arts Movement. Her art seeks to uncover the marginalised and overlooked stories of figures and histories and their associated cultural expressions. She studied Theatre Design at Wimbledon College of Art and went on to receive a Master of Arts in Cultural History from the Royal College of Art. Lubaina Himid won the acclaimed Turner Prize in 2017 and is currently professor at the University of Central Lancashire.

If this piece has caught your imagination Tate Modern’s exhibition of her work continues until 2nd October 2022.
